What is LSD?

Een zegelvel Hofmann

LSD (or acid) stands for the molecule Lysergic acid diethylamide. It’s a synthetic substance derived from ergot. Ergot is a mold which appears in cereals. Earlier, ergot was used by midwifes, to stimulate labour. In the late 30’s, a research was started to discover the chemical structures of ergot. Albert Hofmann (a Swiss scientist) accidentally discovered the positive effects of LSD during this research.

Albert Hofmann and the discovery of LSD

“Last friday, April the 16th 1943, in the afternoon I was forced to interrupt my work and went home. I went home because I suddenly became very restless and a bit dizzy. At home, I went down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxicated-like condition, which was determined by exceptionally strong imaginations. In a sort of dream state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight unpleasantly shrill), I took a constant stream of fantastic pictures which, bizarre shapes with intense, caleidoscopic play of colors. After about two hours, the effects decreased.”

Soon, other parties started to get interested in the effects of LSD, like the CIA. In the 60’s, LSD was popular drug among hippies.

Tripping on LSD

‘Stamps’ are commonly used to take LSD. A stamp is a small piece of paper that contains one drop of LSD. There are different kinds of stamps in circulation. Each kind has its own image. For example there are Hofmann stamps or doom stamps.

You can also take acid through a capsule, called the windowpane. Or you can put a drop of fluid LSD directly on the skin. Sometimes, people combine LSD and XTC. This phenomenon is called candy flipping. The tripping person gets in a good vibe because of the XTC. It makes the LSD trip very positive and euphoric.

An LSD trip usually takes 6 to 14 hours. Above a critical dose (500µg) the ingested amount of LSD hardly affects the intensity of the trip. The ingested amount of LSD does influence the length of the trip. Users get soon adjusted to acid and there is a cross-tolerance with psilocybin. After a trip, the LSD effect is less for a few weeks. As with truffles, an LSD trip is usually based on what happens in your live. And it’s depending on the set and setting. For beginners, it is always advisable to have company of someone who is sober.

The effects of acid

LSD causes strong trips with strong visual hallucinations and deep thoughts. Time perception changes and you can see sounds, and hear colours. Forgotten memories sometimes come forward. Or new interpretations of previous experiences.

With eyes open, the user will notice a strikingly stronger pattern recognition. Lights and colors are more intense and regular objects are much more interesting to watch. A walk in the woods can give you a completely new experience. The tripper notices every little detail. With closed eyes, abstract patterns can be observed in several colors. Sometimes, there also is a strong sense of being one with the universe or with nature. At very high doses there is a temporary loss of personality and you might be able to have an out of body experience.

How dangerous is LSD?

LSD is considered as a non toxic substance. In practice, the number of users with an overdose which ends up in the hospital, as compared with drugs, is very small. The substance is broken down rapidly by the liver; the half-life period is 2.5 hours. After twenty-four hours, the substance is completely removed from the body.

I have been lucky enough to come across this wonderful drug twice and I have only positive things to say about my experience.
The trip, especially the beginning, is very intense but it soon levels out to a very strong mushroom/truffle buzz, comparable to the highs of a Hawian shroom or a Hollanda truffle, with the main difference being the length of your journey.
A good trip can last easily 14 hours and even then because of the amount of thoughts and ideas continuously running through your head sleep is never going to be a factor at the end of the night.
With no come down and very little recovery time needed LSD is a drug that keeps on giving and never takes.
