The Difference between Psilocybin and DMT

Psilocybin vs DMT

Not every hallucinogenic is the same. Psilocybin from magic mushrooms and DMT from different plants have similarities and differences. This article compares psilocybin and DMT with regards to their effects, duration, and the psychological response they produce.

As psychedelics become gain more mainstream recognition, more literature are being written about these substances. Naturally, people have become more curious about the traits which make each psychedelic unique. These two substances – psilocybin and DMT – are discussed below. This article also compares the psychological trips they produce.

Before gauging the two psychedelics, it’s important to have a detailed knowledge of their individual characteristics.

What is Psilocybin?

What is Psilocybin

Psilocybin comes from magic mushrooms. There are over 200 types of psychedelic fungi all over the world with the widest distribution and species variation in Mexico and North America. Most shrooms gained widespread acclaim throughout history for religious and spiritual ceremonies.

Psilocybin is metabolized by the human body into the compound psilocin before the body can be used it to create strong psychedelic effects. The experience brought by magic mushrooms is always deemed extremely spiritual by the users. This high or “trip” lasts anywhere between 6 to 8 hours and can vary in potency depending on the magic mushroom’s psilocybin content.

A light dose of dried magic mushrooms is less than 0.25g. This amount of dried magic mushroom produces vivid colors and light changes in sensation but without a full-blown psychedelic effect.

Between doses of 0.26 to 1g, the shroomers will see colors which are more intense, saturated, and the walls will seem to breathe. Auditory hallucinations also take place. When taken under a positive mindset and in the right environment, it will create a feeling of euphoria.

A medium dose is between 1 to 2.5g which will generate awesome visual distortions and even closed-eye hallucinations. These closed-eye hallucinations are geometric patterns which appear, slide, and rotate even when your eyes are closed.

Doses higher than 2.5g are considered generally “strong.” At this strength, these shrooms enable people to talk to divine beings or see intricate landscapes.

What is DMT?

What is DMT

Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is the active ingredient in ayahuasca, a brew from different plants which is used in religious and spiritual ceremonies. DMT can be consumed by smoking or by out of a long pipe similar to a bong.

Referred to as the “Spirit Molecule” in Rick Strassman’s book,  DMT is lauded for its intense spiritual effects which can last up to 30 minutes but also feel significantly longer to the consumer.

The main effect of DMT is psychological which is accompanied by intense visual and auditory hallucinations, euphoria, and an alteration of time, body, and space perceptions. Many ayahuasca users describe the experiences with DMT as life-changing and profound which are almost similar to seeing an alternate reality or undergoing a near death experience.

Physical effects of DMT include heightened heart rate and blood pressure, dilated pupils, and rapid eye movements. The DMT experience can also range from exciting and enlightening to frightening. DMT can be so intense that people may have difficulty integrating into the real world again. In fact, the side effects may linger for many days or weeks after taking the drug.

DMT’s surge in popularity is higher than any psychedelic which came before it. Every year, countless tourists travel to Central America to take part in ayahuasca ceremonies and experience the life-changing effects of DMT.

Magic Mushrooms and DMT are not Addictive

Magic Mushrooms and DMT are not Addictive

People are were misled by the media. Like most psychedelic substances, magic mushrooms and DMT are misrepresented in the public. People lack understanding about these two substances. For the past several decades, evidence points to one fact: magic mushrooms and DMT are not addictive.

Interestingly, psilocybin is particularly difficult to abuse because ingesting it creates a temporary tolerance afterwards. Abusing it won’t create the same intense trips. Hence, to produce full-blown psychedelic effects, psilocybin needs a long pause between each dose.

Psilocybin and DMT are members of the tryptamine family. This is a group of alkaloids which are known to play a role in the transmission of the brain’s impulses.

Effects of Shrooms and DMT

The effects of DMT and shrooms have some differences when it comes to length and nature but there are similarities between them too.  Both of them produce strong visual effects and create experiences which transcend space, body, and time, causing the trip to feel much longer.

Effects of Shrooms and DMT

Magic mushrooms are said to make a person feel closer and more connected to the earth and nature. Meanwhile, DMT is said to have more cosmic effects with extraterrestrial themes. They say one is more likely to run into fantastic, god-like creatures with DMT.

People who use magic mushrooms also say they lose touch with reality because they go through longer, more intense periods of introspection. Psilocybin from magic mushrooms also creates highly emotional responses in some people by bringing back past memories and encouraging acute personal examinations. Finally, people on shrooms are more receptive of nature’s beauty because of the geometric patterns they see. While magic shrooms are non-lethal, the inexperienced shroomers might have feelings of nausea and vomiting when taking a large dose for the very first time.

Spiritual Significance of Shrooms and DMT

Spiritual Significance of Shrooms and DMT

It wasn’t until the 1960s when these psychedelics became more known to the public. However, magic shrooms and MDT have long played their roles in religious and spiritual ceremonies since the dawn of humanity.

DMT is the key ingredient to the effectiveness of the psychedelic brew ayahuasca. Cultures in the Amazon region have used ayahuasca as a traditional medicine that promotes physical, emotion, and spiritual healing. In some cases, it’s also used for divination.

Ayahuasca is ingested under the supervision of a shaman and is used to purge negativity from one’s system. Common physical responses to ayahuasca, aside from the psychological effects, are vomiting, diarrhea, and deworming of potential parasites.

Meanwhile, magic mushrooms go way back in time – over 6,000 years ago. These psychedelic fungi were first used in spiritual practices and traditional medicine. Archaeological evidence points to the use of magic shrooms in Mesoamerican cultures for the purposes of communion and seeing prophecies. Aztec cultures notable call psilocybin mushrooms as the flesh of the gods.

No matter which psychedelic you choose to take, an individual should take them with the respect they deserve. And most importantly, true to what Dr. Timothy Leary said, never forget about set and setting.

So, I get that this is just a general description of both compounds but you guys made an error. Dmt is as earth based as you can get. According to Terrence McKenna and I have “double checked “ this as well on my own accord, the worm hole appears to be going in the ground not to space. This makes sense because ayahuasca is a natural plant based substance that by definition ”aya” meaning spirit, soul, death and ground. Then “Huasca” meaning vine or rope/umbilical chord. So, what this means is that You get a rope(capi. B) which is the maoi inhibitor that allows dmt to go through your blood brain barrier. And experience the trip. And get you back to this world. Then mimosa hostilis (dmt) is your guide like if you went on a climb up El Capitan with Alex Honnold and not even knowing how to climb at all times a million. The point is you visit the souls and entities not of this life or dimension, where no fleshy bodies can exist. Dmt might feel alien but good news is it’s from the earth! Some theories say that fungi came from a comet or asteroid that had frozen spores and populated earth. So you can say that psilocybin is more spacey than dmt!
