How Do Sclerotia Magic Truffles Differ from Magic Mushrooms?
Magic mushrooms are a group of over 180 species of fungi which have hallucinogenic or mind-altering properties. Their effects are similar to LSD but with a “softer edge.” These mushrooms are the fruiting body or the above-ground part of the fungus.
Under certain circumstances, some psilocybin mushrooms will develop a fruiting body below the ground. This is the truffle or the sclerotium.
The sclerotium is a compact mass of hardened mycelium which contains food reserves. Its role is to survive extreme environments. Interestingly, they were mistaken as separate organisms until the mid-1800s when they were proven to only be a stage in the life cycle of fungus.
Sclerotia are often thick with a dense shell which are rich in nutrients for the mycelium, including oil. They also contain around 5-10% water and have the ability to survive even in the driest environments for several years without losing their potential to grow. Their sizes vary widely from a millimeter to tens of centimeters.
Magic truffles and magic mushrooms are both parts of the same organism that creates the mind-altering compounds psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin.
Apart from the obvious changes in visual appearance and how they grow, there’s no significant difference between magic mushrooms and magic truffles. The underground part is completely identical to the part above ground.
Interestingly, the most popular type of magic mushroom, Psilocybe cubensis, doesn’t form truffles or sclerotia. However, species such as P. mexicanaand P. tampanensis form these underground truffles that also contain psilocin and psilocybin. These are sold as “Philosopher’s stones” or simply “truffles”.
Do Magic Truffles and Magic Mushrooms Have Similar Effects?
Magic truffles have a very distinct taste that separates them from the fruiting body of magic mushrooms. Magic truffles leans towards a sour flavor compared to the starchy taste of fresh psilocybin mushrooms. Some psychonauts claim sclerotia have higher doses of the hallucinogenic substances, particularly psilocybin, compared to the actual mushrooms but this still stands to be scientifically proven.
The experience you can expect from magic truffles is also identical with the psychedelic effect produced by magic mushrooms. In truffle or in mushroom form, the combination of psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin is effective in creating mind-altering experiences.
Magic truffles, when taken correctly, are capable of producing psychedelic and euphoric effects. Just like magic mushrooms, they can make you feel happy, change how you perceive the world, and distort your sense of time.
Similar to magic mushrooms, taking magic truffles requires you to be in the right set and setting to produce the best experience possible and negate having a bad trip.
0.25g of dried magic truffles will let you see more vivid colors and make you more sensitive to cold. Other than these changes in sensation, you can’t expect a more dramatic effect.
Between 0.26-1g, colors become more intense and saturated. The walls will seem to breathe. Your perception of sounds will also differ starting with hearing echoes to actually hallucinating noises. It’s recommended to listen to some psychedelic music tracks when you take this amount of magic truffles. This is also followed by an intense feeling of happiness also known as euphoria. You’ll know you’re euphoric when you keep laughing or giggling over nothing.
Taking a medium dose of magic truffles, between 1.1-2.5g, will create more intense visual distortions everywhere including “closed-eye hallucinations.” These are geometric patterns that appear, slide and rotate to form complex shapes even when your eyes are closed. Ingesting this amount of magic truffles lets psychonauts see dream-like images and change their thought patterns to feel more enlightened. Emotions will also become magnified and livelier.
Higher doses of magic truffles intensify these effects and some claim being able to talk to divine beings or intelligent creatures from other dimensions.
Another similarity magic truffles share with magic mushrooms is the general timing of their effects. However, the amount of time it takes to feel the effects of psilocybin is completely dependent on your body’s ability to digest and metabolize psilocybin.
The come-up starts 10-60 minutes after eating magic truffles. During this time, the effects of psilocybin will grow stronger and the body will succumb to it. Around 60-80 minutes, your body will “peak.” This is the highest point you’ll reach and also the time when the effects of psilocybin are strongest. You’ll remain in this state and “plateau” for the next 2-6 hours. Afterwards, the effects will wear off.
Wherever you are in the world, enjoy your magic truffles safely and legally. Check your country’s laws about magic mushrooms before buying legal magic truffles and grow kits online.
