Psilocybe Subaeruginosa

Psilocybe Subaeruginosa

  • Psilocybe subaeruginosa is a potent magic mushroom which has gained popularity in Australia and New Zealand. This magic mushroom contains the psychoactive compounds psilocybin, baeocystin, and psilocin. When these strong compounds come together and start affecting the body, they create strong, vivid hallucinations which are definitely a step above other magic shrooms.

This fungus was first seen in 1927 by John Burton Cleland, a famed Australian mycologist. It used to be classified as Psilocybe cyanescens but it was found out that it’s an entirely different species from the latter. In 1992, a study was conducted and revealed that P. australiana, and P. eucalypta are synonyms of this species.

    Psilocybe Subaeruginosa Strain Guide

The cap – scientifically called the pileus – of Psilocybe subaeruginosa can be anywhere between 1cm to 6cm across. This cap is usual conical to convex in shape with a nipple-like protrusion at the top – a structure known as the umbo. When moist, this tan brown mushroom cap appears striated. As it dries, the color becomes pointedly lighter.

Psilocybe aeruginosa’s gills are closer to each other compared to the gills of other shrooms. They are cream-colored when young but eventually turn violet brown in older species. This shroom reaches 22cm in height. However, even mature species can be as short as 4.5cm. This tall mushroom is supported by a half-centimeter thick stem, also known as the stipe. P. aeruginosa stipes are white, enlarged near the base, covered with a white partial veil, and contains thin stripes.

This shroom leaves dark, violet brown spore prints and gives off a doughy odor with a highly glutinous taste.

    Psilocybe Subaeruginosa Habitat and Distribution

When hunting for Psilocybe subaeruginosa, you have to remember this species only grows in the southern parts of two countries: Australia and New Zealand. They usually grow solitarily but sometimes in small clusters too. This species of magic mushroom is also one of the wood-loving varieties.

The best place to find this magic mushroom is on wood chips in urban areas, pine tree plantations, and woody debris in forests and gardens from April to August.

    Psilocybe Subaeruginosa Similar Species

Because of its features, certain types of harmless and toxic mushrooms are sometimes mistaken for P. subaeruginosa. Of particular note are the Pholiota communis, and the Galerina marginata.

  • Pholiota communis is a species of fungi which is also found in Southeastern Australia. It also loves wood and debris, appearing on leaf litter of pines and eucalyptus in autumn and winter. Luckily, this doppelganger of a mushroom doesn’t contain any harmful compounds. It may not be palatable but you can
expect no harm will come to you if you ingest it by mistake.
  • However, the Galerina marginata is another story. This representative species of poisonous mushrooms is distributed across North America, Europe, parts of Asia, and Australia. Unfortunately, the poisonous fungus is known to grow on the same patch as P. subaeruginosa. Ingesting the dangerous shroom will cause drastic, dangerous effects such as kidney failure, and coma eventually leading to death. One way to distinguish the harmless, psychedelic mushroom is by checking for bluish discolorations caused by oxidation – a chemical process that occurs in injury or handling. This reaction is absent in mushrooms that don’t contain the psychoactive compounds – psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin. This bluing is evident at the bottom of the stem where it has been cut and sometimes around the edge of the cap. You will also notice there are some purplish black discoloration on the veil remnants on top of the stem and beneath the cap.Scientific studies revealed Psilocybe aeruginosa contains 0.45% psilocybin and other compounds were fairly low at less than 1% of the psilocybin content. However, the overall percentage shows Psilocybe subaeruginosa is a strong hallucinogenic shroom. If you handled your shroom in a rough manner and it bruises black, it’s a sign that most of the psilocybin has oxidized and the fungus is virtually useless.

    Psilocybe Subaeruginosa Hunting Guide

If you live in southern Australia or Australia, there are at least 5 typical locations where Psilocybe subaeruginosa grows. Their season usually starts on April but they need to get a decent amount of rain first. One night of rain is all they need to start growing and they do grow fast.

The first location is on the side of a walking trail in a park or forest which has plenty of wood chips.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa is a wood-loving variety… they just can’t get enough of it! Tanbark provides plenty of wood and because the pieces of wood are tiny, they provide less resistance for the shroom to grow out. They simply slip into the bits of bark and blossom.

  • You should also remember to look for this shroom in piles of mulch in parks and garden beds. If you’re lucky you may already have some growing in your own backyard garden. If those don’t work out, you can check out areas near a creek, or river, where wood chips are littered or have fallen trees nearby. In this type of location, you can expect Psilocybe aeruginosa to grow on slight inclines instead of plane or flat areas. Keep an eye out for this shroom on any inclined clearings leading into a creak. And finally, they can be found flourishing in areas where tall grasses grow. They love to grow in tall grasses where twigs are all around. This provides the shrooms with protection and camouflage from predators (humans) and the grass collects moisture and allows mushrooms to keep hydrated without drowning. Finally, this environment allows P. subaeruginosa to grow taller with thinner stems. You should also use you other senses when looking for P. subaeruginosa or any other mushroom for that matter. Does the air smell like flour? Is the environment humid?Just remember – never eat an unidentified mushroom.
