Famous People who Used Psychedelic Mushrooms

Don’t do drugs!

That’s the message which has been repeated since we were children. While this message does have a lot of merit, some people don’t listen but went on to do great things. These are people who used psychedelic mushrooms.

Psychedelics have been used by many creative and successful people. However, because of the stigma brought by psychedelics, only a small percentage of successful shroomers have spoken in public about the benefits of magic mushrooms and their experience.

Here’s a list of famous people who claim to have used magic mushrooms. It’s no coincidence that they are among the most creative and inventive minds of our time who partly credit their successes to psychedelic shrooms.

Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon

This actress whose career has spanned decades admits to using magic mushrooms and suggests they moved her deeply. “I’ve done ayahuasca and I’ve done mushrooms and things like that,” claims Sarandon. She also adds she likes tripping on shrooms outdoors such as in the woods or in the Grand Canyon. Magic mushrooms remind her of her place in the universe and reframe things for her. “I think you can have some profound experiences.”

Frances McDormand

Frances McDormand

The award-winning Fargo actress has experienced both synthetic and natural psychedelics and only wishes they were more properly appreciated. She says it’s unfortunate that drugs were not handled properly and they were used to separate economic classes. Hopefully, the revision of marijuana laws could help ease the stigma on magic mushrooms.

She also went on to say psychedelics were not marketed properly and gained a reputation as counter cultural or against society. If they had been, people would be using it. She describes her experiences as “profound… very profound.”

Abraham Maslow

Abraham Maslow

Maslow is an American psychologist best known for creating Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This hierarchy has a far-reaching influence in society – shaping healthcare, research, sociological concepts, and more! It cannot be denied that Maslow has left his legacy on modern society.

Although he did not overtly admit it, his endorsement of psilocybin mushrooms, sound suspiciously as if he was speaking from personal experience.

He said it’s clear how LSD and psilocybin affect the human mind and allows people to have some possibility of control during the experience. These drugs in the right people under the right circumstances can produce positive experiences so that people don’t have to wait for life to come along, bringing happiness with it.

Maslow wants to explore the possibility of producing a private, personal peak—experience under observation and whenever people wish whether it’s under religious or non-religious circumstances to study the birth of illumination or revelation.

He also postulated how magic shrooms may create religious experiences in non-trippers thus bridging the chasm between these separate halves of mankind.

Too bad he didn’t live long enough to witness the scientific studies done centered on magic mushrooms.

Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain’s forays into the culinary world (both foreign and domestic) are a staple in any lifestyle channel. This American chef, author, and TV personality has made his mark in pop culture as well.

During one interview with the Joe Rogan podcast, he spoke of his experience with magic shrooms.

“We used to soak hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms in honey overnight and then mix them into hot tea before work. You’ve never seen such over-garnished plates in your life.”

Maybe magic mushrooms are responsible for his award-winning palate that created so many culinary masterpieces.

Sarah Silverman

Sarah Silverman

This Emmy award-winning actress, stand-up comedian, actress, and producer has constantly addressed social taboos such as racism, sexism, and religion through comedy. With such a mindset, it’s no wonder she’s open about the use of magic mushrooms.

She has an interesting story from the first time she used magic mushrooms in New York. While high, she and her friends heard explosions and thought they were at war. She forgot it was July 4th. They went to a café, and got hot chocolate with a bunch of homeless people who became her friends.

Alejandro Jodorowsky

Alejandro Jodorowsky

The Chilean-French filmmaker known for the cult classic Tusk and other films has admitted to using magic mushroom at least once in his life and has endorsed people should use it at least once in their lives.

His experience with shrooms was with his master, Oscar Ichazo, who ran the Arica school of analysis. Jorodowsky’s initiation happened at night and lasted for eight hours. While he didn’t say much about his experience, he believes every person especially politicians – “from Bush and Blair and all that” – should take magic mushrooms one time to open their mind.

He says mushrooms will help them see the world in a different way because they only speak about materiality, not one word about spirituality.

Doug Stanhope

Doug Stanhope

American stand-up comedian Doug Stanhope is one of the people who links magic mushroom with religion and spirituality.

Stanhope has a peculiar tip for people who want to use magic mushrooms to reconnect with their religion. He says it’s not enough to eat a magic shroom stem and just see colors. Other people should eat the whole bag and see God at least one in life. “A real God!” he claims.

According to him, the real God people need to see isn’t the concept that’s been hammered into people’s heads for the past 2000 years that the masses just accept without any logic. “The real God works for you,” he says. “Every time you deny your own logic, deny your own instincts, you deny your own God.”

David Carradine

David Carradine

And wrapping up this list is the badass Bill himself. David Carradine is an American actor and martial artist. His autobiography Endless highway discusses his use of peyote and psychedelic mushrooms as well as his use of drugs such as cannabis and cocaine. You can probably conclude which ones had a better, more positive effect on him.

And there you have it. Some of the creators and innovators who used magic mushrooms at some point in their lives. It’s no coincidence that these shroomers also happen to be some of the greatest people in their field.
